K, whats the difference between methodists and presbyterians, lutherans, and episcapalians?

Im watching the 1947 movie "Life with father" and theres an issue because one is an episcopalian and the other is a methodist; and it seems they look down upon methodists--any ideas why?? I wasn't raised in a religious family-hence the questions...
