Are wood finishes poisonous to birds?

I am making my own bird box, and I have just read a website which said that any artificial finishes are poisonous to birds, suggesting that I should use beeswax. However, many websites that are selling bird boxes sell them with a variety of artificial finishes, such as different coloured varnishes. So... are wood finishes poisonous to birds?
